This winter, the Elmhurst Art Museum presents Sustenance &amp; Land: Five Artists Consider Our Relationship with the Earth, a group exhibition exploring human connection to the land and the many ways the earth sustains us. Participating artists Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman, Chunbo Zhang, Lydia Cheshewalla, Claire Pentecost, and Tomiko Jones work in a variety of methodologies addressing human relationships to the land, exploring a broad spectrum of themes including nutrition, cultural relationship to food, scientific investigation, spirit, history, and the future. Humor and creativity are woven throughout, guiding viewers through a rich tapestry of ideas about how we interact with the earth. Curated by Liz Chilsen, Sustenance &amp; Land: Five Artists Consider Our Relationship with the Earthtakes place at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 South Cottage Hill Avenue, from January 25 to April 27, 2025.&nbsp;Interim Director of the Elmhurst Art Museum Ann Quinn Kelly says, “It will be an honor for the Elmhurst Art Museum to host this extraordinary group of artists. Their work is diverse in focus and technique. Together, the exhibition will raise meaningful considerations about our multifaceted relationship with land and how it sustains us.”&nbsp; Highlights of the exhibition include Ciurej and Lochman’s Processed Views: Surveying the Industrial Landscape, a series which interprets the frontier of industrial food production and the alarming intersection of nature and technology. Also featured is Ciurej and Lochman’s Recipes for Disaster, a 68-page book of recipes that address the dangers of the climate crisis. Chinese-born, Chicago-based artist Chunbo Zhang explores cultural influences and differences between Chinese and American cultures by looking at food presentation. Her seductive watercolors of American staples, such as Chicago deep dish pizza and burgers, critically examine American consumption.Osage artist Lydia Cheshewalla presents intricate collages constructed of seeds. Her multifaceted, land-based practice shows a gentle care for the landscape, inspiring viewers to approach nature with curiosity and to take restorative actions for the earth. Claire Pentecost interrogates the imaginative and institutional structures that organize divisions of knowledge, focusing on nature, artificiality, and food systems. In Our Bodies Our Soils, Penatecost collects soil samples from a wide variety of farms and presents them in jars reminiscent of apothecary inventories or pharmaceutical processes, addressing the state of our soils and its intersection with health. Tomiko Jones presents These Grand Places, multimedia collages that incorporate archival pigment prints, platinotypes, tri-color gum prints, cyanotypes, handwritten text, video, artifacts and performance.&nbsp;This series looks at public land as sites of trauma instigated by the immeasurable, but palpable, effects of human activity and climate crisis.&nbsp; Finally, a tandem exhibition in Mies van der Rohe’s McCormick House on the museum campus presents photographs from the Elmhurst Art Museum collection, including black and white photographs by Chicago photographers Joe Jachna (American, 1935-2016) and Michael Tropea selected from a gift to the Museum from the David C. and Sarajean Ruttenberg Arts Foundation. Jachna's photographs depict the landscape in abstract compositions which impart a mysterious or otherworldly sense, while photographs by Michael Tropea capture industrial views of sites along the Mississippi River.&nbsp;ABOUT THE CURATORLiz Chilsen leads the Exhibitions and Collections programs at the Elmhurst Art Museum. She has organized over 50 exhibitions, including at the Chicago City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower, Chicago Transit Authority’s InTransit Gallery, and at Columbia College Chicago among others. She is founder of “Lessons of Place,” a long-term photography project that explores human relationship to place. Sustenance & Land: Five Artists Consider Our Relationship with the Earth

This solo exhibition of work by Willie Cole, who was an Arts/Industry resident in the Kohler Co. Pottery in 2000, features newly commissioned sculptures alongside a selection of works spanning over three decades.Cole visualizes the reality that domestic spaces are often tangled with histories of enslaved labor. He uses the visual vocabulary of the domestic sphere—shoes, tools, furniture, for example—to bring forward the grief and intimacy that linger within private spaces.By using craft and household objects in his artworks, Cole spreads awareness of women’s and enslaved peoples’ labor that has been ignored or under recognized and is integral to the history of the United States. These reflective works are Cole’s initiative to complicate labor histories and lack of visual representations in the art canon.Home Assembly highlights Cole’s refiguring of familiar and frequently discarded objects to confront and demand attention from his audience. His assemblages and prints convey intricate histories and messages, demonstrating the complexities and the commonalities shared in the cultivation of homes and the lives they shelter. Cole frequently uses the iron —burn marks, the ironing board, and the iron itself—as parts of human figures, as protective shields, as the shape of ships that transported enslaved Africans to the Americas, and to commemorate the work of women.The chandelier sculptures on view allude to the community investment involved in constructing a home. OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, March 7, 2025 5-8pmOn view through April 27, 2025Two Person Exhibition - Joan Geary and Rebecca Stahr: Echoes of Earth and Sky Rebecca's recent encaustic paintings merge an interest in process and the encaustic medium with an organic, almost three dimensional approach to developing a composition. Images that seem to reference nature are the accumulation of thousands of little points of pigmented wax applied in layers. The image seems to simultaneously form and dissolve, and speaks to the mutable and atomically fractured nature of our physical environment. With a technique that recalls the repetitive creation of weaving and textiles, Stahr creates images that can be read both as surface and image. Geary was born in Chicago, IL, but raised in Glenview, a northern suburb. An early encounter with surrealism – specifically Salvador Dali – and the pop art and op art movements of the 1960s laid the foundation for Geary's lifelong obsession with art. As an adolescent, she would take the bus into the city to spend the day walking around The Art Institute of Chicago alone, seeking out those edgy genres that made such bold use of color, shape, and odd juxtapositions; such a foil to her daily life, and so defiant and wholly different than what she knew. Her solo meanderings through the museum lit something up in her, a yearning for something more – to see and create.Joan works mainly in oil and cold wax, a medium that allows for the buildup of a rich history and patina through amassing layers of paint and excavation back through those layers. Luminosity and light have become trademarks of her work, which explores color and shape inspired by nature and God. Her work has been featured in numerous venues throughout the Midwest, as well as publications such as The Chicago Tribune, The Doings, and a book titled Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin. The central motif of this series is Housouge, an ancient Japanese imaginary flower believed to bloom in paradise, symbolizing the delicate border between life and death. These intricate floral patterns have been passed down through Asian history and are prominently featured in sacred spaces, embodying hope within the cyclical nature of life.&nbsp;&nbsp; During periods of social unrest - such as natural disasters, epidemics, and political upheaval - Housouge patterns historically became more large, vivid, and saturated, reflecting resilience and a collective yearning for harmony. In today’s world, where the present often feels intertwined with echoes of the past, Lake’s Housouge-inspired” Unison” seeks to illuminate moments of optimism and hope amidst the turbulence of contemporary society.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mayumi Lake (b. On Friday, April 4th, we will be having an exhibit opening for featured artist Allison Svoboda's show "Preternatural."&nbsp;The opening will run from 5-7 PM and will display Allison's newest work, which focuses on the dualities of our natural&nbsp;world and what we experience in it, with organic patterns and forms having an instinctive draw for her. In Gallery I,&nbsp;We Are Our People&nbsp;showcases a series of mixed-media works where Locks uses a blend of ink, pencil, and collage elements on wood panels to create intricate, layered narratives. Each piece emphasizes the individuality of its subjects, drawing attention to how each portrait interacts within the collective. "The hand remains distinctly present in the gesture of the mark-making," Locks notes, while the&nbsp;dynamic interplay of heavy marks and collaged materials invokes a sense of movement--like a poem that reveals more with each recitation--prompting viewers to consider how connections between forms allow for expression and weight. The exhibition's title derives from a piece of writing (shared below) that Locks began performing during music shows in late 2024, as&nbsp;politics, death, and hatred took on a more tsunami-like presence in the United States. In Gallery II,&nbsp;Listen to This&nbsp;features hand-drawn collages that emerged from the comic and graphic novel-making classes Locks taught at Stateville Correctional Center.&nbsp;This body of work transcends traditional comic forms, encouraging viewers to explore fractured narratives and abstract expressions. "These pieces became visual analogs to my sonic adventures, hence the title," Locks shares, illustrating how his artistic practice merges visual and auditory elements. The collages are rich with layered meanings, mirroring the complexity of the stories he encountered while teaching.&nbsp; ﻿A limited edition 7" record featuring two exclusive tracks created for this event will also be available.Damon Locks: We Are Our People/Listen to This&nbsp;runs March 23 through May 3, 2025. Artist's BioDamon Locks is a Chicago-based visual artist, educator, and vocalist/musician. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago where he received his BFA in fine arts. Since 2014 he has been working with the Prisons and Neighborhood Arts Project at Stateville Correctional Center teaching art. He is a 2025 recipient of the Creative Capital Award. In 2017 he became a Soros Justice Media Fellow. He received the Helen Coburn Meier and Tim Meier Achievement Award in the Arts in 2015. In 2019, he became a 3Arts Awardee. Locks spent four years as an artist in residence as a part of the MCA Chicago's SPACE Program, introducing civically engaged art into the curriculum at Sarah E. Goode STEM Academy High School. He teaches Improvisation in the Sound Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Damon Locks leads the Black Monument Ensemble, is a member of New Future City Radio, Exploding Star Orchestra and co-founded the band The Eternals.

The participating artists originally connected through their intersecting community and artistic practices.&nbsp;There was a shared desire to “do more,” whether that meant exploring new media, participating in liberatory work, or simply having the time to hang out together. This exhibition is a point of reset. For fifty years, the Arts/Industry residency program has given space for meaningful connections between the arts and industry. At the core of those moments are the Kohler Co. factory associates—mechanics, engineers, technicians, mold makers, and many more. They work side-by-side with the artists, giving time, sharing skills and knowledge, and often opening their homes and personal lives.Lunch Break: Arts/Industry in Between celebrates that powerful exchange between artist and associate through artwork made in the factory. It brings forward the conversations and relationships that happen as a result of making art.This exhibition focuses on artwork made by residency artists that celebrates the associates or that exemplifies the cooperative learning that takes place at the factory. The works on view are drawn primarily from the Arts/Industry collections of JMKAC and Kohler Co. Each artist gifts one work to each organization at the end of their residency,Art objects made by associates while on break from their duties or after hours are also shown. In addition, a selection of artist gifts to associates will be on display. Ashland Avenue, Chicago&nbsp;60607The word ‘thread’ is often used to represent continuity -&nbsp;of an idea, a theme, a life.&nbsp;The simple repetitive action of interlocking threads and joining pieces to create something that is handed down among generations, chronicles the continuum of life. For Louise Pappageorge, her proclaimed “obsessive relationship” with the making of cloth and lace structures blossomed in her childhood through skills she learned from her grandmother and mother. Pappageorge states:&nbsp;“The drawing of threads connects me across shared generational labors to the greater multigenerational consciousness of womankind, whose structures have preserved humanity through the creation of magnificent cloths.” In&nbsp;Feral Laces and Off the Wall Doilies, Pappageorge’s works of found and newly created lace and crochet structures initiate a visual rebellion, as she&nbsp;investigates the realms of feminism through artistic exploration that dismantles preconceived boundaries while challenging the traditional demarcation between craft and fine art. In a gender-biased society, craft-based work often tied to women is dismissed as merely functional or decorative, while ‘fine art’ disproportionately celebrates creations by white male artists.Combining lace, knitted, and crocheted materials with gleaming metal leaf and patinated finishes, Pappageorge’s artwork suggests fine sculptural works, as if created from cast metal. In their final form her sculpture departs from the ethereal and fragile nature of lace structures, delicately born from the hands of women throughout time. Instead, they become dynamic expressions of contradiction and embody the multifaceted nature of “women’s work” and artistic creation. With architecture as a backdrop, these fabrics break free from the constraints of tradition, turn feral and transcend conventional boundaries. Viewers are invited into an unfamiliar dimension where the intricacies of lace and crochet unfold, while straying from the stigma that often relegates utilitarian creations to the periphery.
