This year's event, co-chaired by Cheryl Sandner and Ann Thompson, with honorary co-chairs Jeremy Efroymson, Elissa Hamid Efroymson, and Adnaan Hamid, will take place on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 6:30-9 p.m. at the recently-opened Columbia College Student Center, with a VIP Reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. preceding the event. The Silver Camera Award honors those who have made significant contributions to the medium of photography. Chicago-based Kenneth Josephson (American, b. 1932) is considered a pioneer of conceptual photography. His career was launched at the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, where he studied under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Josephson was later a professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1960 to 1997, and a founding member of the Society for Photographic Education. He was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship (1972) and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships (1975 and 1979). His work is in the MoCP permanent collection as well as the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Bibliotéque National, Paris; and Fotograficka Maseet, Stockholm. Artist Kenneth Josephson to be Honored at MoCP's 2020 DARKROOM Benefit

The fair's October 8 announcement lists 68 participating galleries, primarily from around the United States, plus several participants from Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Poland, South Korea, and more and other countries.&nbsp;Always a crowd favorite because of the reputation for being an accessible, yet high-end fair, built up over the course of more than 25 years, fair organizers said at the end of last year's fair that 2018 was their most successful fair to date. This show explores aspects of identity through the artists’ processes of utilizing their shared language of storytelling through interpretations of masks and facades in both classical and unexpected mosaic materials.In Savage Liaisons, artists Karen Ami (Chicago, USA) and Pamela Irving (Melbourne, Australia) expand upon their individual practices and ongoing visual discourse manifested in their mosaics and drawings. Pulling inspiration from roles of characters in both American and Australian cultures, the artists explore dualistic qualities in the form of masks that reference contemporary icons and personalities. Ami and Irving each incorporate materials which challenge the norm; their methodology questions the traditions that exist within contemporary mosaic. This unique and shared language incorporates handmade ceramic pieces, broken china, byzantine glass, and miscellaneous objects that connects us viscerally to both the past and present worlds.&nbsp; Ami and Irving have the same veins of material training and education in art history, ceramics, sculpture and mosaics. The two met over a decade ago while leading their newly formed Mosaic Arts organizations in their respective countries. Both artists have become outliers and influencers in the modern mosaic movement. SOFA Chicago Announces Participants and Programs for 26th Edition

Threewalls’ social justice fellowship, RaD Lab+Outside the Walls, will expand to support 12 artists per year with grants of $25,000, focusing on community-oriented research and public projects that reimagine racial justice and equity. The program was founded in 2017 to address the disproportionally inadequate funding and artistic support ALAANA artists typically receive.The multi-year nature of the grant opens up an expansive realm of possibilities for Threewalls to invest in artists and creatives who use radical imagination to practice a racially just society. The $900,000 will allow Threewalls to support&nbsp; ALAANA creative projects and non-profits with operational funding. All of the fellows will demonstrate alternative ways towards racial equity through the lens of radical imagination and social justice.The RaD+Outside the Walls program allows fellows to spend a year researching, developing and testing an idea that responds to the lived experience. Outside the Walls, Threewalls’&nbsp;exhibition model, presents the research as installations and interventions throughout Chicago in various neighborhoods. He currently lives and works in Hudson, New York.&nbsp; Growing up, Gibson traveled extensively with his family, living for long periods of time in Germany, Korea, and the United States. While moving from place to place, he found solace and friendship in the music scene, at various times exploring the sounds and social traditions of the punk and rave music of his generation, and the PowWow traditions of his native heritage. Through the course of the Biennial, sites across Chicago will come alive with lectures, panels, performances, workshops, and events both produced by and in coordination with the Biennial.The CAB announced last week&nbsp;that more than 100 programs will take place at upwards of 50 venues from September 19, 2019 through January 5, 2020.&nbsp;These range from events, lectures, panels, workshops, and performances organized by the Biennial to partner programs that respond to the Biennial’s themes at cultural organizations around the city, bringing the Biennial’s exploration of space, community, and architecture to Chicagoans of all ages, interests, and backgrounds, as well as visitors from around the world.&nbsp; The 2019 edition, titled ...and other such stories, will form an expansive and multi-faceted exploration of the field of architecture and the built environment globally -- as such, programming is central to ensuring that the conversation is inclusive, diverse, and ever-changing through the course of the Biennial“Chicago is at its best when a diverse range of communities, organizations, and individuals come together to learn from one another, collaborate, and explore our shared histories and hopes for the future.&nbsp; The comprehensive range of programming taking place during the Biennial is an exciting example of the exchange that makes our city so dynamic,” said Mayor Lori E. Chicago Architecture Biennial Elaborates on Fall 2019 Programming 

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418602/uv0xmrqh02xvppvj9qdo.gif"><figcaption>Founders, 2019, installed in Hadiya Pendleton Park, photo courtesy of Floating Museum</figcaption></figure>By CGN Staff via PRLast week the Floating Museum collective unveiled its latest public art initiative, Cultural Transit Assembly, which turns the CTA Green Line into a moving cultural destination and activates Chicago neighborhoods along from Austin to Englewood, throughout the summer, culminating at Art EXPO September 19-22, 2019. &nbsp;In 2017 the <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2017/8/following-the-floating-museum-where-and-when-to-expect-it">Floating Museum</a> perched on a barge that literally floated down the Chicago River in order to highlight specific areas of the city and, in the organizers' own words, “create temporary, site-responsive museum spaces to activate sites of cultural potential throughout Chicago’s neighborhoods”.&nbsp;The robust roster of Cultural Transit Assembly programming – all free and open to the public – includes a series of Chicago artist exhibitions in Austin Town Hall Park and Garfield Park and a gigantic inflatable sculpture paying tribute to the City’s founders, which will be stationed next to the Green Line in a new location every Wednesday.&nbsp;Connecting the sites, a two-car ‘L’ train is currently traveling the Green Line route featuring custom artwork commemorating Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, Chicago’s first non-indigenous settler, and his wife Kitihawa from the Potawatomi tribe. Young. &nbsp;“Following up on our River Assembly project on the Chicago River in 2017, we’re now utilizing Chicago’s public transit system – and this line in particular that travels through southside and westside communities - to both celebrate the important cultural work being done in these neighborhoods as well as strengthen the ties between these spaces.&nbsp; And it is worth noting that some 50+ local artists have been commissioned (i.e. paid!) to lend their visual art and spoken word talents to Cultural Transit Assembly.” &nbsp;&nbsp;Cultural Transit Assembly elements:&nbsp;Currently underway:• Green Line ‘South Branch’ features a gigantic roving, 25 x 35 x 34’ inflatable sculpture titled Founders, featuring four busts facing the four cardinal directions. &nbsp;Featuring a mix of interpretations of items from the DuSable Museum of African American History and the Field Museum collections, the busts represent du Sable; his wife, Kitihawa; Harold Washington (the first African American Mayor of Chicago); and a bust of a young boy by artist William Artis. &nbsp;&nbsp;Founders is popping up weekly thru September 11 in community spaces adjacent to the Green Line from Austin to Englewood and can be viewed both by CTA riders and those at ground level. For this installation, Floating Museum worked with the Field Museum and its Potawatami textile collection, in addition to collaborating with contemporary Native American artists Chris Pappan (Kanza, Osage, Cheyenne River Sioux) and Monica Rickert-Bolter (Potawatomi).• Then, expanding the Cultural Transit Assembly message to an international audience, the final destination for Founders will be ArtEXPO at Navy Pier, installed at the Fair entrance, Sept 19-22, 2019.• Green Line Train Car ‘Soul EL’ is currently in regular service on the Green Line and incorporates two train car ‘art galleries’ dedicated to DuSable and his wife, Kitihawa.&nbsp; Visual artists include Pappan and Rickert-Bolter, plus Adam Sings In The Timber (Crow) Elise Paschen (Osage), Santiago X (Koasati/Chamoru), Debra Yepa-Pappan (Jemez Pueblo, Korean), Arthur Wright, Brandon Breaux, Robert Johnson, Nyia Sissac, Max Sansing, and Joyce Owens. &nbsp;&nbsp;As curated by Avery R. Young, local performing artists will also reflect on founding stories and have envisioned the founders with artwork covering the cars’ exterior and interior. ‘Soul EL’ is inspired by the American television series Soul Train that merged music, dance and fashion; stay tuned for pop-up music and poetry performances on the ‘Soul EL’ in the coming weeks.&nbsp;Coming soon...Chicago artists were asked to submit work in response to prose written by Avery R. Young that focused on the 1968 Democratic National Convention and riots throughout the city’s west side.&nbsp; Selections were made based on the quality of the submissions with a focus on including women and artists of color as well as artists who had a strong connection to the areas.&nbsp; Those works will appear in two locations: &nbsp;&nbsp;• Green Line ‘Central’ will feature a field of sculptures on pedestals for the green space in front of Austin Town Hall adjacent to the Central Green Line stop. The sculptures are 3D printed ceramic reproductions of works by Chicago artists Ayanah Moor, Derrick Woods-Morrow, Elizabeth Barren, Juan Angel-Chavez, Kushala Vora, Rhonda Wheatley, Ricky Willis, Rodrigo Lara Zendejas, Santiago X (Koasati/Chamoru), and Tony Lewis.• Green Line ‘Conservatory’ re-imagines civic sign infrastructure as artwork and creative language through new interpretations of common street signs, such as Stop and Yield. &nbsp;Signage will be installed adjacent to the Conservatory/Central Park Drive Green Line stop. EXPO CHICAGO Announces Core Programs

Atlas has extended the limits of his medium, forging new territory in a far-reaching range of genres, stylistic approaches and techniques. The endowment builds upon the efforts of a five-year conservation teaching collaboration implemented by the Department in the spring of 2018.The generous donation from Deal Booth assures the perpetuity of the piloted initiative’s courses and opportunities for students, funding art conservation and conservation science course offerings on campus as well as an annual undergraduate internship in the field. The endowment marks UChicago as one of the few national institutions to offer regular art conservation and conservation science courses at the college level within a liberal arts institution.“What truly sets UChicago’s approach apart from specialized conservation programs elsewhere is how it is embedded in a liberal arts education and graduate studies in art history and the humanities,” said Professor Christine Mehring, Chair of the Department of Art History. “Over years of object-driven teaching, I have seen how the material and visual presence of art and architecture fosters not only heightened attention but empowers students from different backgrounds and disciplines: everyone looks at the same thing, together. Open to both undergraduates and graduate students, the Conservation Seminars draw on ongoing research and treatments of objects in the Art Institute, and in UChicago’s Smart Museum, Oriental Institute, Special Collections, and Public Art Collection. Artist Jim Dine Receives France's Highest Civilian Award

This week they just announced plans to relocate to a newly renovated space in Chicago’s River West neighborhood at 688 N Milwaukee. The public will be invited to view the inaugural exhibition, a presentation in collaboration with Human Rights Watch, on September 6.&nbsp;Totaling 6,300 square feet, the new location devotes 2,400 square feet to exhibition space, an increase of more than 140% from the gallery’s previous location on W. Superior Street. The new space will be one of Chicago’s largest non-commercial galleries. The new location provides the gallery with a street-level space with massive windows. Upon entering the reception area, visitors will proceed into the enormous gallery space, which features 15-foot-high ceilings, natural light and generous floor space for sculpture or hanging work. A large adjacent space with floor-to-ceiling windows, a kitchen and a courtyard, will be utilized for special events and programming related to exhibitions including artist talks, panel discussions, performances, film screenings and educational workshops.&nbsp;In 2014 Weinberg/Newton Gallery framed an ambitious new mission – to become a presenting platform for social justice issues. Through collaboration with artists and non-profit organizations, the gallery aims to create space for dialogue about social justice issues relevant to local, national and international communities. In the past, Weinberg/Newton Gallery has had the privilege to work with organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, Facing History and Ourselves and the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law. Cleve Carney Art Gallery to become the Cleve Carney Museum of Art

The plans mark a milestone for the organization founded on the same day 45 years ago. The expansion will strengthen the Trust’s relationship to the Oak Park community, deepen its educational impact, increase indoor and outdoor capacity by more than 20,000 sq. ft., and enhance the experience of the 90,000 visitors to the Home and Studio site each year.Since its founding in 1974, the Trust has become a Chicago-wide organization that has welcomed approximately 5 million visitors to its five sites, located in Chicago and Oak Park. A non-profit community anchor, the Trust has grown to a staff of 50, with over 650 volunteers, and has just completed restoration of the Robie House, Wright’s consummate Prairie masterpiece, to widespread acclaim. Its annual Wright Plus Housewalk is a signature event known around the world.Architect John Ronan, who also designed Chicago’s Poetry Foundation building, was selected as the architect of the expansion. EXPO CHICAGO Announces Participants for Eighth Edition

This completion of this final portion of the Riverwalk, which cost $12 million, means that every block of this award-winning 1.25-mile promenade and recreational amenity has been modernized or developed for the first time.&nbsp;“Chicago is reconnecting with the River in a way that improves our quality of life, protects ourenvironment and enhances economic development that is sustainable for future generations,” said Mayor Emanuel. “The completion of Riverwalk East is a major milestone in that journey. We are finally fulfilling Daniel Burnham’s original vision of Chicago as a true two-waterfrontcity.”In August 2018, Mayor Emanuel announced plans to improve older sections of the east end of the Riverwalk from Michigan Avenue to Lake Shore Drive, building upon the success of the Riverwalk and creating even more opportunities for residents and visitors to interact with and enjoy the Chicago River.The design team, led by Mueller and Mueller, worked with the landscape architecture firm of Site Design Group to substantially complete this reimagination of Riverwalk East. The new Riverwalk East space includes: 10,000 square feet of “play” space; 94new LED dark sky compliant light fixtures; three public restrooms; approximately 150 new tree plantings from 35 different species to increase the diversity of the urban tree canopy, and 20 types of furnishings from the Riverwalk palette increasing public seating by over 500 along the Riverwalk.“I have been designing public spaces in the City of Chicago for the past twenty-five years," said Ernie Wong of Site Design Group. "It is an honor to have worked with Muller 2 and the Department of Fleet and Facility Management on the site improvements for Riverwalk East! The design intent was to take a largely urban hardscape on the west end and transiting to a natural and lush landscaped corridor. The committee selected Weather Station by the Chicago-based artist team Iñigo Manglano Ovalle and Bill Baker. The memorial commemorates the 28 submarines manufactured in Wisconsin that used the Chicago River to connect through various waterways to the Gulf of Mexico and on to the war efforts after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.As part of additional investments in the Riverwalk, Mayor Emanuel, the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) and 2FM developed the Riverwalk Community Marketplace between Michigan and Wabash Avenues, a new concessions programto highlight existing vendors in the City’s culturally diverse communities. Construction on themarketplace began in the fall of 2018. This investment includes the expansion of the existing path to create a corridor for the placement of kiosks. Following a 2FM public solicitation to identify marketplace vendors that encouraged minority and women-owned vendors to apply, the new Community Marketplace will open in June and will feature nine new vendors.Additionally, five panel installations by artist Ebony G. Patterson were unveiled and will sit above the Chicago First Lady ticket booths. Patterson, represented locally by Monique Meloche Gallery, is known for colorful, large-scale, multimedia murals created out of everyday, tactile materials.&nbsp;The gauzy installations by sculptor Robert Burnier, featuring site responsive tent-like geometric structures of steel, nylon, hardware, streamers, are also still on view on the west end banks of the River.&nbsp;It's worth noting that Mayor Emanuel leaves office in just a few days, on May 20.&nbsp;In a May 2 interview with the <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/theater/ct-ae-mayor-emanuel-chicago-arts-jones-0505-story.html">Chicago Tribune</a>, when asked why he placed so much importance on arts and culture while in office – and according to the reporter, perhaps too much – Emanuel responded,&nbsp;"It was always more than programming for me.
